Exposure – Part 2: How to Expose

I was due to complete a three part article on the basics of exposure and I must first apologise for the huge delay in the follow up to the initial part. If you haven’t already, I would recommend reading the first part, Exposure – Part 1: The Controls before starting the current article.

Now that you know the basic theory about the three main exposure control elements, lets take a look at how your camera puts these together. The basis of this article however is to ultimately get you the photographer to decide the exposure, hence we will just briefly cover the auto modes and spend more time learning about the part auto and manual modes.

Clarissa’s Communion

My Wife the Model

Not always easy finding models when I have the time to practice in my tiny home studio. After a lot of coaxing and nudging I sometimes manage to persuade my beautiful wife into throwing some poses together while I bore her with flashes of light and funny direction.

ck Free & Diesel Denim

Playing around with a couple of perfume bottles working on product photography. Both setups are very simple and easily achieved with limited equipment.

In both shots I’ve used a wooden cutting board that was lying around. For this first shot, the CK Free bottle is placed on the cutting board and flash is at about 1/32nd power into 60cm softbox placed directly behind the bottle. The white blown out background you see is the face of the softbox. For a simple product shot like this with barely any opacity there was no need to fill light.

Canon 5D Mark III

Yesterday Canon announced the third incarnation in the 5D series, the EOD 5D Mark III. With the recent releases from the Nikon camp, although anticipated, the launch of the of the Canon 5D Mark 3 series did take quite a few including myself by surprise. The rumours on specifications did intensify after the launch of the Canon 1DX but I did not expect it quite so soon.

The Canon 5D series is a full frame (35mm sensor) camera aimed at advanced photographers looking for a lighter body than those available in the 1D series.

While many complained that the 5D Mark 2 lacked in the form of upgrades from the original 5D, it would be far more difficult to make similar complaints this time out, the 5D Mark 3 is a leap and a half over it’s predecessor.
